From Holland to Brooklyn: Local Business Owner Tasked with Providing Signage Solutions for Major NYC Roadway

HOLLAND, Mich. – If there’s one key takeaway that Leslie Louisell has learned in her nearly 30 years as a visual and graphics communications provider, it’s that small solutions often have the largest impact.

When she and her husband, Tim Weber, became the franchise owners of Signs Now Holland in 1990, they didn’t imagine the impact their work would have on not just businesses and people in the local area, but across the country.

Recently, Louisell and her team had the opportunity to provide signage solutions for the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel in New York City, a historic thoroughfare that connects Red Hook in Brooklyn with Battery Park in Manhattan. In 2012, the tunnel sustained severe damage due to flooding from a storm surge during Hurricane Sandy. After a significant cleanup process that included the removal of an estimated 86 million gallons of water, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched a renovation project for the tunnel, including updating the tunnel’s emergency signage.

“When the World Trade Center towers were hit on 9/11, the exit signs in both buildings went out; people were left in complete darkness, making it even harder for them to find an exit route,” said Louisell. “That changed how we approach wayfinding entirely. In the case of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, which is almost entirely underground, it was vital that they wayfinding solutions met the rigorous New York standards and were visible in little to no light situations.”

Louisell’s work on the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel project began in 2017 and was officially completed in March 2018. The Signs Now Holland team met the UL required standards and created approximately 250 wayfinding signs that absorb light and can stay lit for up to 12 hours during a loss of power, illuminating pathways for people to safely find an exit.

“Personally, this is one of the most exciting projects that I’ve worked on,” added Louisell. “Many people don’t realize the impact that something as small as illuminated signage that doesn’t rely on electricity can have in an emergency situation. We’re proud that we were able to provide those solutions for the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel all the way from here in Holland.”
