How are our vinyl decals made?
Printing vinyl decals may seem like a protracted affair, but if you have state-of-the-art plotters and full-color vinyl material (like Signs Now does), the actual fabrication process doesn’t take long at all. If you have ever been curious about the mechanical steps involved in producing custom vinyl graphics, you’re in for a treat below/
1. Design and Consultation
- Obviously, you need something to print first. If you only want printed logos, or already have an in-house design team, just send in vector files; they work best due to their scalability to a variety of dimensions.
- Have something in mind, but have no clue how to implement it? Leave the frilly design work to us, and we’ll communicate with you on how to bring your idea to life.
2. Printing
- This step is only necessary for projects that require more than one color, or specific shading. In that case, we’ll run a sheet of vinyl through a wide format printer, which will provide the correct hues for your design.
- We offer both white and clear vinyl sheets, the latter being primarily for window graphics.
3. Plotting
- We develop what’s called a cut file for your personalized design, based on your specifications. Then we run the decal sheet through the plotter.
- There are two primary types of cutting: contour cut and precision cut. Most of our plotters use precision cutting, which means that no border extends around the graphics or logo.
- The machine reads the cut file, and then channels the shape of your vinyl decal using a blade on a moving head.
4. Weeding
- So, even though we’ve gotten the plotting process out of the way, our team of professionals must scrupulously sift through every last decal. This allows them to remove any excess material that isn’t being used in the design.
- This is the most involved part of the process. Each member must have an X-Acto knife, along with a steady hand.
5. Masking
- For the installation process, alignment is crucial. That’s why we cover your design with transfer tape and keep everything spaced properly.
- As a result, you or a hired technician won’t be struggling to keep every single letter in your design on a level plane!

Can vinyl graphics and decals ruin surfaces like glass and drywall?
Our high-quality vinyl adhesive is designed to prevent damage during removal. Something as simple as a felt-tipped squeegee can help peel a stubborn vinyl decal off a storefront window.
Otherwise, bending the decal at the corner, as if it were a sticker, will often suffice. Another adhesive, such as scotch tape, can be employed to remove graphics in hard-to-reach places.
